March 28, 2007
Sunny Okinawa~

The YOMITAN vill is the next stop for us to have a short tour.
It is a pottery village full of artistic atmosphere.
We visit a workhouse of glass-blowing, which has a romantic
name as "Rainbow".

In this village, I met the guardian angels of lion features again.
People in Okinawa named the sculptures "Shisa" (シーサー).
They looked very much similar to our "Fong-Shi-Ye" that I met
long time ago in Tainan and the isolated island Kingmen.
We pronounced as "Fong-Shi-Ye", in the three Chinese character
they mean "Wind-Lion-General", i.e., a Lion General who guards
the village from strong wind".

Besides, "Shisa" and "Fong-Shi-Ye" had the same meanings
in Taiwan and Okinawa! They protect the island as well as the
seaside villages from strong wind, guard people against devils,
and also give blessings

This "Shisa" I met in TOMITAN is very cool.
He wears glasses that makes his looking like a scholar.
In addition, he also is a glassblower!

People in this village are all artistic~
The old person sits in front of the oven and the heated glass is
rotated continuously around the axle by his hands. With his
expertise at glassblowing, he forms the glass into a dish at the
best timing. How amazing!

Walking along the road, the houses and scenery let me think
of "May-Nong" in Kaohsiung county (south part of Taiwan).
It seems that most of the people living here are clay profession.
Again, very similar to the town "Ing-Ge" in Taipei county~

Here comes another workhouse.
SEE! Shisa stand in front of the gate smile and saying hello to us!

Is it very difficult to understand the meaning in Chinese saying
"A huge number of things give a pretty sight"??

(I don't know how to translate/describe this saying >_<)

Inside the workhouse, girls draw or paint for the clay
under sunlight.
Cute Natalia goes into the house and
talking in body language happily.

Natalia,

A huge number of Shisa in prototype.
Looks they are now undergoing the air-dry stage.
Not colored or harden by baking, yet the bravery
look is not a blur~

March 28, 2007
Sunny Okinawa~

Yesterday the rain made me feel so blue and
I prayed for good weather before I went to bed last night.
It seemed God heard it.

What a beautiful day it is!
The heavy rain yesterday just faded away as a dream.

Coffee break~ having a cup of cafe in black as usual.
The skylight is quite good for taking photos.
On the back yard, there are the light and shadow playing
a game of hide-and-seek.

As soon as the last speech of the morning session was ended,
An atmosphere of expectation filled the seminar room.
We were going on an excursion this afternoon!
With lunch box, we got on the bus and began the visiting tour
of the historic buildings and the art of ceramics.

This old castle in Okinawa looks like the one we have in Tainan...
The castle in Tainan was named "Forever Golden Castle"
in meaning and pronounced as "Yi-zai-jin-cheng".
Not only the castle, the sky also is beautiful as I've
experienced in Tainan~

I love taking photos of these small plants.
See? They though looks weak and soft, yet they are strong
while facing the tough environment for survival.
As hard as these rock are, they also are touched and willing
to be counted on~

In fact I didn't ask the opinion of stone...and
I guess so.

This bug walks gracefully and passes by my feet.
With no exception, I just don't know who it is.
However, this time I am smarter than before~
Cause I have some information about it.

This tiny creature was classified to~ Animal Kingdom,
Phylum of Arthropoda,
Class of Insecta, Order of Coleoptera.
And Family of ... I am not sure at this level.
Tenebrionidae or Carabidae?

Guess now nobody knows what I am talking about ^_^
Let's talk about it in a more popular way.

"The Order of Coleoptera have the most abundant lives in
the Calss of Insecta."
has the same meaning as
" the beetles are the biggest family of insects".

I always have difficulty distinguishing ground beetles or
darkling beetles.
This cute one looks like a ground beetle
for its lovely shine like metal...

March 27, 2007
Cloudy Okinawa~

Just like yesterday, the birdsong wakes me early in the morning.
Through the roller blinds, the sky reveals slight darkness in color.
I stay on my bed and listen to the bird singing...
Around 7:30 am, the sounds of "Good morning" appear in the alley
outside the rooms.

Something catches my eyes!
It is the window which locates at the corner on the way from our
room to the Chura Hall, what a breathtaking picture!

Sitting in the seminar room, a smell of rain fades in the air.
Surprising that my instinct of weather also works in Okinawa.
It indeed rains~

Speeches this morning were kind of difficult to me,
for the model system used was yeast.
It's the organism that I was quite unfamiliar.
Even I was not acquainted with this field, these talks still
intrigued me by the excellent presentation of the speakers.

The rain almost ran away in the evening and the sky
turned to be bright.
Well, the bright color did not last long~
Just a moment the sky was occupied by the darkness of night.

Before the sky gets completely dark,
beside the wooden platform on the back yard,
I see a wild flower flapping in the breeze...

Meet Me in Okinawa!

I was very lucky to have Ruth as a company in Okinawa.
We shared the room and spent times together in Onna.
In Astrology, Ruth and I belong to the same sign -- Leo.
Well, we did not set anything on fire.

Modern Beauty in the Old Castle

I was also thankful to have an opportunity to join the workshop
in Okinawa.
I did learn a lot from both oral and poster presentations.
Besides, friendship is the most precious thing I've been given here.
People in Okinawa are pure, simple, and open-minded.
Facing so many foreigners who came from different countries
speaking in different languages, they hosted us with not only
patience but also great passions.

Pretty Girls

Ruth and I planned to have a short city tour in Naha
before our departure.
Tomomi (middle of the photo below)
was so dear to us like our family.

She drew pictures, printed the route map and time table
of monorail
in Naha city that we would rely on to finish
the shopping list of Ruth
and find the delicious "Chinsukou"
for my lovely little Tina.

The girl dressed in orange is also a Taiwanese.
Chen-Chun had a flight from England to Okinawa for the workshop
She is now pursuing her Ph.D. degree in Oxford.

Including me, there were four participants from Taiwan.
My adviser Sue (middle) and Dr. Chen (left of the photo) were
invited
to give oral presentations about their research in Taiwan.
Ruth and I, we were late for application and lucky to be accepted
as exceptions to participate the meeting.

The group photo was taken by the OIST staff.
Post it here in memory of this wonderful meeting.
We were destined to meet each other in Okinawa~

March 26, 2007
When Science Meets Nature in Okinawa~

I was awaken at 6:30 in the morning,
not by the alarm but somewhere outside the window,
there's a bird singing...

Stages toward the Sea

Ruth and I decide not to stay on bed even though
we still feel sleepy.

It is a bright day, we wish to take some pictures of
Onna in the morning.

The Viewing Platform

After breakfast, we stepped toward the narrow lane
in the back yard,
which we wished but gave up exploring
last night...
Walking downstairs, the viewing platform was
there waiting for our visit.

The Viewing Platform

Next to the wooden stages,
the beach showed up with a charming smile.
Ruth, busy making records of the beautiful morning,
became part of the beautiful scenery.

Stages toward the Sea

The first seminar began at 9:00 am on time.
Sitting in such a spectacular surroundings,
every lectures excited the audience with the important findings.
People here were greatly satisfied!

Coffee Break

The NATURE mothers and soothes people who are engaged on research all the days.
No more poker faces at this moment are present but in a spirit of finding the answers and the enthusiasm for sciences remain unchanged.

March 25, 2007
Okinawa, Nice to Meet You!

The sun was confusing me with its glaring light.
Just one or two hours earlier, the sky was cloudy and grey.
How come it turned to be so bright as if the sun rose from the west!

The No. 58 Highway

Staring out of the window, as far as the eyesight can reach,
it is the East China Sea.
I think it is because of the clouds,
the air over the sea looks whitish-grey in color.

Islands and Coral Reef in the Sea

We had a good time in the gathering dinner.
Although we could not speak in Japanese,
our poor English still worked to let us have new friends here.

Girls in Japan talk in a nice manner~
soft tone of voice with tender and polite attitude.
Having a conversation with them makes me behave in a gentle way. @_@

Guardian Angels of the Seaside House

The sky turns to dark.
It seems the air becomes cooler than this afternoon.
We step outside the building and lay on the floor just next to the seminar room.
Stars shine in the sky.
Though with clouds, I see the Big Bear waving hello to me.

A Bright Night of the Seaside House

Walking around the building from the back yard to the front gate,
we were attracted by the lights shining out through the windows.
No more words, camera was busy again.

The Institute that Organized this Workshop

We will have the first session at 9:00 am tomorrow.
Time for us to go to bed.

We went back to our room.
I used the coral that was picked on the beach this afternoon
to decorate my desk.
It looks like~~ a person stands alone and enjoys the sea breeze...

March 25, 2007
Okinawa, Nice to Meet You!

On the way from Naha airport to Sea Park Hotel,
Sue was very sick.

Ruth and I were worried that Sue might not be able to give a seminar next day.
We returned to Sue's room from the beach.
Sue looked weak and still ill.

I touched her forehead and felt that she had a slight fever.

Part of the Terrace

Sue told us not to worry about her illness,
she felt better after taking the medicines.

It was 5:20 pm, the shuttle bus was scheduled to leave for Seaside House at 5:30.
I took my baggage and left Sue's room,
together with Ruth,
we got on the bus for registration in Sea-side House.

View from the Terrace of Sue's Room

Wow~finally I am in the room that Ruth and I will share together for the coming days.
Though without terrace, the BIG window makes the room widen and bright.
No doubt~ I dare not have a look at the brilliant ocean unless I wear the sun glasses...

Room in Seaside House

Outside the window,
Okinawa showed us her extremely gorgeous nature!

It looked just like a poetry and brillance~
We enjoyed taking nice shots again and again before we left for the gathering dinner.

A Poetic Scenery

March 25, 2007
Okinawa, Nice to Meet You!

The shuttle bus left Naha Airport at local time around 11:00 am.
My 5-day trip in Okinawa started at this moment.
As soon as the bus left Naha Airport, the ocean showed up.

Beach nearby Sea Park Hotel

I felt acquainted with the air and scenes here.
It seemed that I was in Ken-Ting National Park.
The boards of various advertisements were written in "Kanji".
Surely we can read Chinese characters with no difficulty .

The Meeting of Love

Wow! MacDonald, Kentucky, Mos Burger, and Family Mart~
Neither foreign nor strange, it is the way as we used to see in Taiwan.
Am I in a dream? I doubt if I did fly four hundred miles far away from Taipei.

Coral Landed on the Beach

Camera still lies in the baggage, I cannot take pictures without it.
The only thing I do is staring at the beautiful scenes and imagining happily...
what we will have for lunch after we settle down the baggage.

It took about 1 hour and 20 minutes on bus, we finally arrived the "Seaside House".
Something missing with accommodation for me, nothing to do but wait.
Thanks for Sue's mercy, I placed my baggage in Sue's room and left for lunch with Ruth.
It was 2:00 pm.

Somebody Has Been Here 到此一遊的記號

Six o'clock in the evening is the registration time for all participants.
We still have some time to walk around.
For sure I have my camera on hand, we start towards the beach.

The sky was a little bit cloudy, lucky me, it did not rain.
The ocean confused me with his various faces in blue - heavy, light, dark or bright...
Few people stayed on the beach in this afternoon.
We enjoyed a luxurious walk and leisure time along the coast.

Nothing Left but Memory

March 30, 2007

To my dear family and friends in Taiwan and Okinawa,
I've landed safely in Taipei last night.

This is my first time to visit Okinawa.
However, at the first look I felt that everything is quite familiar.
As most of people who have visited Taiwan agreed to call Taiwan "Formosa",
I think people who have experienced a tour in Okinawa
will all agree that Okinawa is a "Treasure Box".

Okinawa is a wonderland truly existing in this modern age.
Everywhere we hear people talking about peace and love everyday.
People in Okinawa do not talk about but live in peace and love instead.

Stories are as many as the words can tell,
memories take no words but lasting.
Although I looked forward to flying home,
the moment I just had a feeling as if I were leaving my family.
I felt sad waving goodbye, yet life always goes on this style...

When the lights of Taipei city came into my sight,
scenes of everyday life in Okinawa replayed in my mind.
I suddenly understood that waving goodbye is not the end.
It is a beginning as well as a blessing for our next meeting.

Dear family and friends,
Please be patient with my slow hand to show you the photos in Okinawa.
Follow me and imagine having a walk on the beach with me.
